A car wash and a detail get compared on price, which makes the detail look expensive. Compared on what they actually do, they are not really the same purchase at all.
A drive-through wash removes loose surface dirt from the exterior in about four minutes for around $15. That is a genuinely useful thing, and if the car is simply dusty, it is the right answer. Nobody needs a detail to get pollen off a hood.
What it does not touch: the interior, the door jambs, the wheel barrels, anything bonded to the paint, and anything that needs a human deciding how much pressure to use.
A detail is the car cleaned by hand, deliberately, inside and out. A proper vacuum that reaches under the seats and into the trunk. Every plastic surface wiped down rather than dusted. Wheel wells and door jambs pressure washed, not ignored.
